Thriller survey
I decided to draw up surveys for us to target our audience in the correct way. See the range of questions above, it also includes leading questions allowing the public to give us feedback on whether the correct marketing strategies influence people seeing the films.
Im then going to take the results from this survey to alter our potential marketing strategies, in order to increase interests and box office figures.

Screenplay & Script
Script: A play in written format.
Screenplay: A script, but with camer shots.
The screen play is writtten long before the story board, when writing the screen play. As when people go and pitch to the funders. The screen play is what tells you how many actors are needed. It will have included within the location, setting and time of day. So from this they can establish if they will need a studio, travelling expenses and the amount of people on the team.
They will have a short description,of key characters: who they are/what they look like. From this you can establish the amount of diversity that will be encorperated into the film. This then could be helpful in the long run as it helps see warning signs of possibly creating contravers. For example not including people of an ethnic background, people with disablitiltes and sexual orientation.
They will also include key dialogue betweeen characters and details of their actions and expression. I believe this is because the people they are pitching to will have a greater understanding of the films genre.
They will also include details of where the camera is in each scene, so they are able to imagine what the scenes will look like.

Lighting practice
3-point fill lighting
· 3 Light create a normal-looking
scene with soft shadows and average colours. Using a 3-light setup to provide
normal lighting across and entire object, the exact opposite of chiaroscuro.
This is used in most ‘normal’ scenes with any object in focus.
Chiaroscuro Lighting
· An effect of contrasted light
and shadow.
High key lighting
· High key lighting uses harsh, bright
lights to reduce contrast in scene, giving the scene a white wash, clean look.
Backlighting
Natural Lighting
· Natural light coming from the sun,
but can also be referred to light source that has yellow or white light. Used
in combination with other lighting effects (3-point fill)
Artificial lighting
light that comes from man made objects, such as light ulbs or florecent lights

Se7en Textual analysis
The sound through the majority of these scences is fairly the same so i thought it would do a bulk analysis of the ones that i though was not nessasary to analyse separately:
The sound used has features similar to the scratching of a chalk board which is really not a pleasant feeling to encounter therefore long before the film has started the sound is a huge indication of what is really in store for the audience. The sound is very ominous and disurbing this high pitched tones, resulting into you feeling uncomfortable and on edge. The diagetic sound adds to your suspicions of what may happen in the film and keeps you guessing.
-Camera angles and movement
The use of a close up of this ageing book feels very inocent which corrolates with the smoothness of the page turning, being slow then making you feel suprisingly comforatble the complete opposite of what you would think the makers of the film would want.
-Editing
The titles in the shot look like the sound, not very nice to look at, quite messy and uncomfortable. The editing is slow and smooth in comparison with the whole opening title, again making you question the genre of the film youre about to watch.
-Mise-en-scene
the lighting in the back ground is soothing in a strange way, its a juxaposition witht the darkness of the shadows within and around the book. However, the fact the background of this close up shot is blurred it ominous which therefore makes your mind wander into what could possibly be going on.
-Sound
challenges the feel of the camera angle used as mentioned above the sound is not pleasant to listen to, it has aspects of sterotypical horror films

-Camera angles and movement
The movement begins to pace up now after the first shot, forcing the audience to feel uncomfortable in their surroundings,of course the speed of this particular shot may have been influenced by the context, seen as though it is just for publicity and shows no context to the films overall feel, unlike the main foreshadowing shots
-Editing
when introducing the featuring stars the text on screen goes from a very thin font and moves around ever so slightly,as well as the actual text submerging into an un readable Burr of white.
-Mise-en-scene
The black on Whie juxaposition is interesting becasuse the colour back has very dark connotations to go along with it while the While has completely the opposite this could then give mixed signals to the media recievers of what is actually to come.

-Camera angles and movement
The use of an extreme close up in this shot is shows connotations of being ambigious seen as though we cannot see the whole scene we are left guessing the serverity of the situation at hand.
-Editing
it seem in this shot they have put an overlay on top of the original footage and then making it seem older than it is actually. as you can see there are lines coming through showing ageing which then would lead us to beleive it was maybe filmed along time ago and could be outdated
-Mise-en-scene
The blacking out of words in the book at first sight looks as if it could be clues for what will occur during the film. Interestingly, he is blocking out the word 'transexual' which is quite a controversial action to have in an opening sequence. However, we haven't been given any context up to yet so it then attracts the media receiver to keep there attention.

-Camera angles and movement
The camera has no movement in this shot, but the close up in this shot was focused towards the left of the screen, cutting off the rest of the other page. Therefore gaining suspicions of ambiguity since we cannot see the rest of the page.
-Editing.
The editing is mostly to form the text as the shot itself is still and there are no more alternative shots to accompy this. Again the text is not a clean and tidy therefore suggesting disruption.
-Mise-en-scene
The use of this printing technique would give the audience the person doing this could be an investigator, finding evidence. Again showing foreshowing of what is to come in the flm, or what he could be doing. Since the shot is so ambigious it makes you wonder what he is actually up to. Interestingly it cuts away before the print is actually finished so the audience doesnt know what he is uncovering

-Camera angles and movement
Unsurpingly a close up shot is used again, and not showing the background, so the audeince is forced to imagaine the situation they was in. we would infer that because he is using some sort of stiching mechanism he could be a doctor or be in a doctors surgury.
-Editing
The editing around this shot uses 2 jump cuts of different angles of the same activity both intensifying the dirtiness therefore adding to the disurbing pragmatic inference around this ambigous shot.
-mise-en-scene
The fact his hands are dirty and quite unsanisery you would suggest he was definetly not a doctor, possibly he was an amature. However when putting all aspects in consideration we can draw the conclusion that he probably draw to activities of a dusturbing nature.
dirty hands.

-Camera angles and movement
In this shot they also use a close up but enough to esablish the surrounding area is and the edges of the book are showing. The camera shifts between muliple shots and pages of the book, possibly showing the amount of people he may have had 'dealing' with.
-Editing
The editor cut between the pages of the book cut between pages of the book but also ensuring continity while moving as when each page is turned they fade into each shot. This could have an underlying message that they are showing you something that they are hiding and maybe dont want you to know.
-Mise-en-scene
When teaking the pictures out of a misleading path you are beging to imagine the pictures seem quite old considering the sruffy edges of the them and the book. You could possibly suggest that he could be an investigator in crimal law or on the other hand and the more likely option considering the previous suggestions these people could be the victims of curel events. Overall these shots are enticing the audience and keep them wondering.

-Camera angles and movement
There are two extreme close up shots of the proper noun 'god' therefore showing its intensity and significance in the whole scene. The movement between the angles of the shots is fluids but quick, this could then lead us to believe that 'god' is extremely important and could have some underlying connotations to go along with it.
-Editing
Between both shots there is a very small differnce, one is even more close up on the proper noun, yet the transition between is extremely quick showing possible worry and panic. Things could possibly be intense for the said person.
-Mise-en-scene
Clearly we can safely say that the fact he is cutting out the word 'god' from a doller, it shows major disrepect and contraversiy with people who hold believe n god. We can take from this he does not have guidence, maybe he is mentally unstable. Other connotations we can draw from this is that he could be a murderer of people who carry a religion? The note is dirty and seams to have had a lot of use, i could say that therefore the surroundings are unsanitery, furthering our suspitions.
contravercy, removing god? he doesnt have guidence, could he be killing because of eligion
-Sound
At this point in the showing the music or rather background noise changes significantly, throughout the music stays fairly similar. But interestingly in this particualr shot they chose to have a song to come on with the only words being 'You bring me closer to god' this could be a metaphor that he could be killing people because he is religous and wants people to be with god again. Maybe he is killing criminals, so wants them to be a better place?

-Camera angles and movement
Although it doesnt move the camera angles the extreme close up of this shot itself shows ambiguity we are unable to see the rest of the background and makes us unable to see what and where the location this is taken from. I suggest this is because of the possible hints that it could show.
-Editing
This shot shows up for not even a second yet has many pragmatic meanings behind it, this could be a big clue through the whole film. The fact they was possibly trying to hide this shot shows significicance that many people may not be able to establish.
-Mise-en-scene
The background is dirty and proves whatever the surface it has been written on, it used frequently so that suggests it could be a public place and maybe not the place said person has been based. Unfortuantly we cannot see beyond this shot so we will have to infer.
-Sound
In these last shots before ending it is just before the previous shot i analysed and in this one the song lyrics have finished and return to the other music, maybe it suggests that this hasnt got as much relevance as the other. However, as said previously this shot has been hidden away for only a split second and i feel it could have impact on the background story of the full film.

Although I completed this as part of my study of the representation of gender for my AS exam, it is relevant to the my coursework as, in planning for this, I will need to consider how the representation of gender is constructed through the use of camera shots, mise-en-scene, editing and sound. This will hopefully enable me to represent characters in a variety of different ways in my film opening.

Techniques we had to use in out preliminary
The 180° rule is a cinematography guideline that states that two characters in a scene should maintain the same left/right relationship to one another. When the camera passes over the invisible axis connecting the two subjects, it is called crossing the line and the shot becomes what is called a reverse shot.
Cutting on action or matching on action refers to film editing and video editing techniques where the editor cuts from one shot to another view that matches the first shot's action. A common example is a man walking up to a door and reaching for the knob.
Shot reverse shot (or shot/ countershot) is a film technique where one character is shown looking at another character (often off-screen), and then the other character is shown looking back at the first character.

Post production Utopia
Utopia is unique in their overall look, despite other television shows who aim to get clean ,crisp and natural shots. Utopia aims for something completely different. They manipulate the colour ratio from a dull, neutral shot to a vibrant, colourful shot with the aim to recreate a comic book look.
An article from a WIRED magazine spoke all about the pre-production. they stated that normally in cinematography they would use greens, blues and reds but they use the opposite colours such as yellow, cyan and magentas.
Before
After
Before
After
As you can see from the before and after photos the post production of changing the colour levels from the everyday, average ,boring colours to eye-catching vibrant colours. It then has a huge impact on the overall effect of the show, the vibrant colours are much more striking to the eye and create a sort of supernatural effect, then again adding to the main focus/ aim of making it look a lot more like a comic book. If they were to keep the colours of the original shots it would look similar to a soap so this therefore at first glance makes you aware it is something of a different genre.

Short action sequence
To help us familiarise ourselves with filming we had to create a short action sequence which included using a whip-pan, establishing shot, shot reverse shot and some extreme close ups. Clearly we used some other different types of shots to help build the picture; but the main idea is to create the impression that we threw a knife without actually showing one, but simply using clever shots to make you believe it happened.
This is the final cut.

Camera shots
(LS) Long shot using backgrounds / Establishing shot
Low angled shot
long shot (LS) and Close up (CU) using the rule of thirds.
Over the shoulder shot (OSS)
An Extreme Close Up (ECU)
Tilt Shot/ Canted Angles
Three different views of the same shot from angles of your choice
The narrative from these few shots is significantly powerful, the main idea behind it is young inpressionable minds are able to be infulenced into making possibly life changing decisions. In this case the Antagonist in this is a drug dealer and the Protagonist is the young boy wanting to experince drugs and ended up becoming ill and affecting his life signifcantly.

welcome to my first blog post.
Although i have just began studying Media Studies i have always been keen about film making, cinematics and different expressive art forms. As a current A-level art student i enjoy using different formats of techniques and materials; therefore i believe media was the perfect fit as it enables me to express myself in multiple different forms and allows me to use and develops a whole different set of skills.
Moreover i am most looking forward to the film making and learning the craft of filmmaking, i am a very hands on person and have a great eye for detail which i think will go in my favour when creating my short film. The filming is the most crucial part in order to portray the desired message or theme of the film. So from my ability to create and read into messages from my art i feel as though i am in a good position.
The task we have been set is to create a 2 and a half minute film opening and i'm looking forward to exploring the media i have yet to familiarize myself with.
Hopefully it will turn out well.
